Let me warn you, this topic is purely speculative.
As a romantic writer, I always compare past history with current situation. I found out, after Oliver Cromwell handed over the government to Parliament, but his successor didn't possessed the capacity and seriousness in running the government.
He even called them Pimps because they run Parliament and country like a brothel. Impatient, Cromwell led his army, positioned them outside Parliament. He entered the Parliament and listened to the Members of Parliament endless debates and arguments.
Tired of inaction, he rose and uttered his famous words:
"You have sat too long for any good you have been doing lately. Depart I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, GO!"
As a custom, after a great man - any great man - left historical scene, there is a void no one can fulfill. As struggles breed success, in turn success breeds complacency. Complacency leads to failures and dooms.
Every nation will face this challenge, but as Darwin puts it: the success of any species not entirely depends on the fittest or intelligent but responsive to change.
Cromwell made changed after the failure of his Rump Parliament. He transformed ineffective government of Rump Parliament to Barebones Parliament. He, for the second time led the nation under the title of Lord Protector.
Prior to WW 2, Neville Chamberlain's administration failed to read Hitler's bluffs. Please read again my posting under the entry of Peace for Our Time. Chamberlain hesitated to declare war against Germany even after Hitler failed to keep his promise.
Leo Amery attacked Chamberlain administration, and re-quote Cromwell famous words: "You have sat too long for any good you have been doing lately. Depart I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!"
This speech inspired British politicians. They acted quickly and 42 Conservative MP voting against Chamberlain, brought the downfall of Conservative government.
Every great nation always learns from history. It was Karl von Clausewitz who suggests that "It's even better to act quickly and err, rather than wait and let the opportunity slip away".
And Clausewitz was a man who distilled Napoleon's genius into military science in his famous work: 'On War.' This book also contributes to the rise of general staffs and war room concept.
In the nutshell, the survival of our nation - in fact any nation - depends of how we respond to challenge. After Tun Mahathir resigned from premiership, no one can fulfilled the void he left behind. Maybe it was due to his failure to develop his successor.
And worse, nobody really wants to take a drastic action to save the nation. Both side of the parties busy with politicking. Seem our politicians, from Ketua Pembangkang to PM busy preserving their own existance. Seems they really enjoy managing this country like running a brothel (excuse my word)
Shall we propose to bring back Tun Mahathir, as our own Oliver Cromwell? Shall he enter UMNO Assembly and utters Cromwell's famous words:
"You have sat too long for any good you have been doing lately. Depart I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, GO!"
Ah, all these can only happen in my imagination.
